NRE is the intense, giddy, can't-stop-thinking-about-them rush of a brand-new connection — the honeymoon phase, described with a term borrowed from the polyamory community. NRE feels amazing but is a little unreliable as a compass: it can make someone feel more compatible than they've actually proven themselves to be, simply because everything's still novel. Naming it helps you enjoy the rush without mistaking it for the whole story.
